“Clean, fluent and enormously inventive” was the way Humphrey Lytletton described Dave Cliff’s playing when he recorded him with Bruce Turner for the Calligraph album, ‘The Dirty Bopper’. While Bruce for his part, is in print as declaring Dave to be his favourite guitarist from the very first time he heard him play. For several years Dave Cliff has enjoyed an enviable reputation among musicians as one of the very finest guitarists Europe has produced. He has proved his ability to perform on equal terms with Trans-Atlantic jazzmen on many occasions and the issue of this album should bring him more of the public recognition he so obviously deserves. I know of no other guitarist playing today with a greater instrumental command, repertoire of songs and knowledge of correct harmony.
