A broad and diverse exploration of a wide range of global rhythms, contemporary classical music, vocal sounds and jazz improvisation.
For her debut album as a leader Italian vocalist Maria Pia De Vito enlisted the support of guitarist Ralph Towner, pianist John Taylor, bassist Steve Swallow and drummer/percussionist Patrice Heral. De Vito, Towner and Taylor previously worked together as part of a touring and recording trio, releasing Verso (PVC1023) on Provocateur in 2000.
A simultaneous progression and departure from Verso, Nel Respiro (roughly translated as 'with breath') combines De Vito's wide-ranging musical interests and experience in different genres. These include sounds and rhythms inspired by music from Eastern Europe, India and Africa, as well as music from renaissance and contemporary classical music, poetry and vocal experimentation.
Recorded in Rome and Bologna the album features ten original compositions, most of which are group collaborations and all of which are characterised by De Vito's uncompromising exploration of the various nuances within improvised music.
Singer, composer and arranger Maria Pia De Vito has studied opera, contemporary singing, music theory and harmony. She started her musical career in 1976 as a singer and guitarist (and later as a pianist) in groups that were ethno-oriented, specialising in music from the Mediterranean and the Balkans. Since then she has performed and collaborated with such great musicians as Kenny Wheeler, Joe Zawinul, Michael Brecker, Miroslav Vitous, Joshua Redman, Gary Bartz, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Enrico Rava, Gianluigi Trovesi, Paolo Fresu, Rita Marcotulli, Arto Tunboyaciyan and Colin Towns' Mask Orchestra.
